SB 5 Update!

The enthusiasm that has been pouring into HQ through your visits, phone calls, and emails is amazing! Thanks to your help, on Monday about 3,000 signatures were turned in to the Secretary of State’s office to begin the process to repeal SB 5. A few hundred of those signatures came from Montgomery County, so again, thank you!!

A lot of folks have been asking: “What can we do next?!”

Currently the language that will appear on the ballot is being approved by the Attorney General’s office. It should be approved in about 10 days and then the process of collecting signatures will begin. Statewide, we need to collect 231,149 signatures. They need to come from 44 counties, and in those counties the number of signatures must equal 3% of the votes cast for Governor in 2010. In Montgomery County, we will need to collect 5600 signatures from registered voters. The 231,149 signatures need to be turned in by June 30th.

We will certainly need everyone’s help in collecting signatures throughout the county. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us an email at contact@montgomerydems.org, or call our HQ at 222-4007. In the mean time, please see the email I received this morning from the Ohio Democratic Party about a kick-off rally that will be held this Saturday in Columbus.

Dear Gen ,

We have a long road ahead. We overcame the first hurdle to repeal Senate Bill 5: turning in 1,000 signatures so that we can get ballot language approved. That language will be approved within the next 10 days and we will then begin to gather 231,149 signatures by June 30 in order to put Senate Bill 5 on the November ballot. Then we must mount a massive, statewide grassroots-based campaign to educate Ohioans on the need to overturn the bill.  Out-of-state corporate interests will spend millions to defeat us, but we will beat them with a groundswell of activism from supporters like you.

Our journey begins this Saturday, April 9, as thousands of Ohioans will descend on the Statehouse in Columbus to officially kick off the campaign to repeal Senate Bill 5. We wanted to extend you, your friends, your co-workers and your family an invitation to attend the ‘We are Ohio’ Senate Bill 5 Repeal Rally Kickoff.

Details are as follows:

Saturday, April 9, 2011
‘We are Ohio’ Rally Kickoff
West Lawn of the Ohio Statehouse

Rally begins at 12:00 p.m.

Please join Ohioans from all walks of life who believe as you do that we must fight to protect the middle class in our state. Let us know you can make it by clicking here.

Sincerely,

Liz Brown, Political Director
